Car Transport Preparation

If you've received your car transport estimates and have selected a car transport service there are some preparations you need to take before your auto transport company comes to pick up your vehicle or you leave it at the car transport service's terminal.

Taking these steps ahead of time will minimize or eliminate problems that could arise from poor preparation:

  • If you're transporting a convertible on an open car carrier, close and secure the top. If the top has any holes, seal them. If you can't close or seal the top considered enclosed car transport.
  • You'll need to inspect the car with the car transport service's representative at the time your car is picked up by the driver or otherwise released into the custody of the car transport company.
  • It's a very good idea to inspect the car on your own before going over it with the driver. This will give you more time to note any existing damage, including dents, nicks and scratches.
  • Take photos of the car inside and out. Allow enough time to have the photos printed before your inspection with your car transport company in case you need to take photos during the transport service's inspection.
  • Preferably, leave no more than a quarter tank of fuel in your vehicle when it's picked up for shipment. If you are transporting an RV you'll want to make sure any propane tanks are safely emptied before shipping the vehicle.
  • If your vehicle has a car alarm, disable it. If the alarm starts going off once the auto transporter has your car, they won't be able to deactivate it.
  • During the pre-transport inspection, if your car or other vehicle requires special "tricks" to get it to start or stop, leave a note with your driver. If you notified the car transport service of a fluid leak, make sure the driver is aware of that information.
  • Read the inspector's report carefully before you sign it. Attach your photos to your copy of the pre-transport inspection report.
  • Get the driver's cell phone number and leave your cell phone number with him in case there is a need to get in touch with each other while the car is in transit.
